In order for a student to pass to the next level, or kyu, he or she must complete the following testing criteria.

9 KYU: ORANGE BELT

KATA

Taikyoku Shodan

KIHON (BASICS): Examiners count:

From front stance, step in punch, stomach level.
Turn, step in rising block.
Turn, step in outside forearm block.
Stepping back, down block.
Moving forward, front snap kick, stomach level.
Stand up.
Feet together, side snap kick (left side/right side).

KUMITE (BASIC SPARRING): Examiners count (5 step-sparring):

Offense (start from front stance, down block).
*Step in punch, face level.
Defense (start from open natural stance).
*Stepping back, rising block, counter on 5. (switch roles)
Offense (start from front stance).
*Step in punch, stomach level.
Defense (start from open natural stance).

THE AMERICAN J.K.A DAN RANKING CRITERIA

I. SHO DAN (FIRST RANK)
Qualification: More than 2 years total practice or 3 months after receiving 1st kyu. Age 12 for youth rank (DAN-HO) ending on 17th birthday.

A. Kata

1. Examinee's choice - Group A: Enpi, Jion, Kanku-dai, Bassai-dai

2. Examiner's choice - Heian 1-5 or Tekki 1.

B. Kihon (sets of three)

1. *(F) Step-in punch once face, twice stomach, front stance.
2. (B) Rising block, front leg front kick, reverse punch in front stance.
3. (F) Outside forearm block in front stance, shift to side stance elbow strike, shift - backfist strike, shift to front stance reverse punch.
4. (B) Knife-hand block in back stance, front leg front kick, shift to front stance reverse spear-hand thrust, back to back stance knife-hand block.
5. (F) From front stance, double front kick, first front leg stomach level, followed quickly with back leg front kick face level.
6. (T) From front stance double round kick, front leg stomach level, followed by back leg face level.
7. (F) From side stance, step across side snap kick.
8. (T) From side stance, step across side thrust kick.
9. (F) From front stance, front leg side thrust, back leg round kick, reverse punch.
10. (T) From front stance, front leg round kick, step-in punch face.
11. (F) From front stance, three consecutive non-stop, single action step-in punches.
12. (B) From front stance, three consecutive inside block, same hand short punch, same time front kick front leg, reverse punch.
13. (F) From stationary front stance, consecutive kicks with the same leg, front kick--side thrust kick.

C. Jiyu Ippon (one step semi-free) Kumite.

1. Step-in punch to face level.
2. Step-in punch to stomach level.
3. Back leg front kick to stomach level.
4. Side thrust kick to stomach level.
5. Back thrust kick to stomach level.

D. Jiyu (semi-free) Kumite.

1. Against a brown belt
2. Against a shodan
3. Against a nidan
